Julie started swimming young in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. She has coached youth and adult swim lessons since high school and loves being in outdoor pools. The team at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, placed fourth, the highest finish in school history, in Division III NCAAs while Julie was on the nationals team. Two of Julie's relays (200 and 400 medley) still hold the school record at Calvin. She received All-American honors all four years in college; her best events were the 100 fly and 100 free.
While out of season, she maintained fitness levels through running. Persuaded by her aunt, she ran her first marathon the fall after graduating and qualified for Boston two marathons later. Seeing the support and love at Boston in 2014, the year after the bombings, was uplifting and encouraging. In the past few years, she's been trying different training tactics to improve her speed in distance races and learning more about running and efficient form while doing so.
Julie moved to Portland in 2014 for her now-husband, and swims, runs, and now (you guessed it), bikes. She also loves cooking, baking, and exploring new restaurants and neighborhoods.
